Chris Boian is a spokesperson in the United States for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). As part of the UN Refugee Agency team in Washington DC, Chris works with journalists, officials, students and many others to help bring timely, accurate information to the public discussion about refugees and UNHCR’s work to assist them. Prior to joining UNHCR, Chris spent three decades overseas as a newspaper and news agency correspondent covering conflict, security and political issues and events around the world. Upon returning to the United States in 2012, he worked as Vice-President for Public Affairs with the Washington DC-based strategic communications firm Turner4D and has served as a consultant the World Bank, the UN Development Agency and other international institutions. Chris is a member of the board for the Peter Mackler Award for Courageous and Ethical Journalism and has been a guest lecturer on international relations at the University of Denver, the London School of Economics, the Sorbonne and Moscow State University. He hails originally from Colorado and speaks French, Russian and Spanish.
